The Secret Of Fátima
The so-called “Secret of Fátima” consists of three parts. The first two parts of the “Secret” were written by Sister Lúcia in 1941, in a letter to Pope Pius XII and later published in her Third and Fourth Memoirs.
The third part of the “Secret” was written on 3 January 1944, at the request of the then Bishop of Leiria, Bishop José Alves Correia da Silva. The sealed envelope was given to the bishop, who kept it. On 4 April 1957, it was delivered in a sealed envelope to the Secret Archives of the Holy Office.
Sister Lúcia gave instructions that the letter could only be read after 1960, because it would only be possible to understand it at that time. The text was read by Pope John XXIII, Pope Paul VI and by Pope John Paul II, after the attack he was victim of in Rome on 13 May 1981. The third part of the “Secret” was revealed on 13 May 2000, by Cardinal Ângelo Sodano, at the time of the beatification of Jacinta and Francisco Marto in Fátima. The full text, with theological commentary, was read on 26 June 2000 by Cardinal Ratzinger.
The first part of the Secret is about the vision of hell. The second part highlights devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, the consecration of Russia to the Immaculate Heart of Mary and the Communion of reparation on the first Saturdays (five months in a row), in order to avoid another great war. These two first parts were revealed in the apparition on 13 July 1917.
The first consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary was on 13 May 1931, by the Portuguese Episcopate. On 31 October 1942 in Rome, Pope Pius XII consecrated the world to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, with a veiled reference to Russia. On 7 July 1952, the Pope consecrated the people of Russia to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
In Fátima, on 13 May 1967, the Holy Father, Paul VI, performed an act of consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, as did John Paul II on 13 May 1982, in thanks for the protection he received when he had been attacked the year before.
The request of Our Lady, the consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, in union with all the bishops of the world and the people of God, was only definitively carried out on 25 March 1984: John Paul II performed the consecration in Rome, with the statue of Our Lady that had travelled from Fátima especially for the event.
The third part is about the vision of the city in ruins. Sister Lúcia revealed that she saw three angels in the apparition on 13 October 1917: one holding a flaming sword, asking penance for the sins committed against the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Our Lady calmed the fire while the other two angels collected the blood spilt by the Pope, religious men and women and hundreds of the faithful. John Paul II associated himself with the man dressed in white in this vision.
